Cybersecurity Tips for Travel
To cybercriminals your technology devices and personal information are just as, if not more valuable than the contents of your suitcase. Whether heading to a work conference or vacation, below are some tips to remain cybersafe and keep your travel plans free from cybercriminal meddling.
For USask specific tips including safe data storage, multi-factor authentication and more, please see Technology for Travel.
Before you go:
Lock it down
Authentication tools and apps help to fortify your accounts. These days, strong passwords alone are not enough to protect key accounts like banking.
Keep updated
Delete unused apps and ensure your devices and software are up to date. Backup your data prior to travel.
Understand how to use MFA (Multi Factor Authentication) outside of Canada
You may have to modify your MFA method while travelling.
Protect your devices
Use a passcode or facial recognition to lock your mobile device. Store devices out of site or use a locking cable. The Find My Phone or Device feature is recommended in the event of a lost device.
While away:
Share with care
Turn off location services when not in use and think twice about publicly sharing photos that reveal you are not at home.
Be cautious with Wi-Fi
Do not transmit personal info or shop on unsecure networks like those in a local café. Instead, use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) or your phone’s cellular connection. Turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when idle as they connect and track your whereabouts.
